We just got back from San Diego last week. Darrin had a conference down there at the Marriott Hotel and Marina. The hotel looked so lovely that we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to stay there with him. We arrived there Tuesday (February 6th) in the afternoon. The weather was warm and very sunny. (We were hot in our jeans.) We walked around Seaport Village that evening. Wednesday morning we went on a whale watching boat tour. It was a lot of fun. We saw three whales. It was great. Darrin had to be at the conference that afternoon and so the three of us went swimming and then had dinner at the hotel.
Thursday, Darrin was busy from morning until evening with work stuff and so we went to the UCSD aquarium in the morning. That is a great little aquarium for children—lots of fish, even a shark tank, and an actual hands on exhibit. It wasn’t too busy so that Jack could run around and yet I will still able to keep an eye on him (for the most part).
We walked around Seaport Village and even took the children on the famous Carosel in the middle of it. They had a blast going around and around and around. I love the quote from William D. Tammeu that says: "You don't really understand human nature unless you know why a child on a merry-go-round will wave at his parents every time around - and why his parents will always wave back. " I love being a mom.
Friday, we drove out to Coronado Island. We played at a park for a little bit and then drove over to the beach and walked on the sand for a moment. Megan really hesitated before taking her first step on the sand. I don’t think she knew what to expect. After a few moments, she sat down and dug in, even tasted it several times…Jack and Megan would have loved to have stayed where all day, but it was overcast and quite chilly. (Mom forgot to bring sweatshirts!) We went swimming again that afternoon, after finally discovering that the hotel had a spa! Megan and I loved sitting in the warm water, but Jack seemed to like swimming in the cooler pool. Unfortunately, the spa and pool weren’t close enough to allow Jack to wade in there all by himself. So we went back and forth and back and forth to and from the spa and pool. We met up with Darrin that night and had dinner at the Hard Rock Café. I love the food, but our bill is always outrageous.
Saturday, we finally made it over to Sea World. That was our planned big adventure for the family. It was forecasted to rain, but didn’t have a single drop until we were walking out of the park-true blessing from above! We had a blast. We saw the dolphin show, sea lion show, animal show and Shamu “Believe.” We walked around every exhibit and saw almost every kind of animal imaginable. I am so glad that we finally went, as it was the highlight of our trip.
Sunday morning (February 111th) was our last day there. The weather turned on us (rained the whole day, which ended up delaying our flight), but that was fine. Before heading to the airport, we drove over to the San Diego Temple. It looks like a castle and is in total view from the highway. I would have loved to have walked around the grounds with the children, but it was cold, rainy and wet. It would be too hard with children in that kind of weather-they needed to stay dry for just a few more hours. We finally made it safely home that night and back to the norm on Monday morning.
